After a very careful consideration of all the books I have read, my first choice of the book to review will be THINK AND GROW RICH by Napoleon Hill. This is a must read for everyone with the desire to make changes to their life. This book has been called “Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature”. When I first came across this book, it totally revolutionised my life, thinking, actions and a new me was born. As a person who loves self-development and motivational literature including videos, I have since come to realise that a lot of the great motivational speakers and teachers of today have read this book and it did change their life from the moment they read it. Rink rich and grow rich sets the platform on which most motivational speakers and teachers stands on.. If I did not come across this book, I won’t be where I am today. Since reading this book, I have certainly picked up good habits which are shaping my desire to fulfill my God given purpose.
Napoleon Hill, the author of this book was born in 1883 in Virgina and died in 1970. he first published this book in the year 1937 but when I first read it, I thought to myself, how can a book this old be so true in today’s world and economy, only for me to discover that this book was first published during the great depression. No wonder his examples, terminology and explanations are typical of today’s world and economy. The good thing about this book and why tomorrow’s generation will pick it up and still find value and riches in it is because, the principles of success for wealth creation are right today as they were when he first published the book.
Think rich and grow rich is an all-time bestseller, having sold over 70 million copies worldwide by 2011. Napoleon Hill draws on knowledge gained from carrying out more than 20 years research of more than 40 millionaires many of whom were his close associates who were wealthy. The knowledge gained from this research were used to form the 13 principles of the Law of success that were discussed in details in this book. Hill draws on stories of Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and other millionaires of his generation to illustrate his principles
The 13 “steps” listed in the book are: 1. Desire 2. Faith 3. Autosuggestion 4. Specialized Knowledge 5. Imagination 6. Organized Planning 7. Decision 8. Persistence 9. Power of the Master Mind 10. The Mystery of Sex Transmutation 11. The Subconscious Mind 12. The Brain 13.
The Sixth Sense
In summarising the first step “DESIRE”, Napoleon Hill sums up six steps to turning a desire for wealth into “its financial equivalent”.
First: Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money.”Be definite as to the amount. (There is a psychological reason for definiteness which will be described in a subsequent chapter).
Second: Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.”)
Third: Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
Fourth: Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.
Fifth: Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
Sixth: Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. AS YOU READ, SEE AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY.
Although this book shows you how to use these principles to create success and wealth, but the principles contained in this book will help you to succeed in all areas of life and be whatever you want to be. Rev Charles Stanley said he used these principles to his advantage as a pastor and discovered they work.. John C Maxwell said this book is a “lifetime must read”. Reading this book will change your life, your thinking and your actions. It’s a book you can read again and again without getting tired or bored. It’s like “The Lion King Movie”. I can watch that movie again and again and still find it interesting each time I watch it.
